A couple of years ago, my son Michael had to have a "sphincter pharyngeoplasty", a kind of throat surgery. The day after that very painful surgery, they wanted to pull out his IV, but he had to begin eating & drinking first so he wouldn't dehydrate. Michael wasn't happy about that at all, very understandably! The pain of swallowing was so difficult it took poor Michael most of that day to muster the courage to take the first swallow. In the end, a soft brownie won out and he was able to begin the road to healing. The more he swallowed, the more healing occurred, not only in his throat, but his whole body benefited from the nourishment.
C.S. Lewis wrote: "Everyone says that forgiveness is a wonderful idea, until he has something to forgive." Ouch. When we discover the pain of being sinned against, we need to have the courage to take that first swallow, because that's the only way healing of relationships will result. It doesn't matter how the pain got there in the first place, whether I offended someone else or they offended me -- it's my responsibility to forgive them (Mark 11:25, Luke 11:4). Even if it's not even on their radar that there's a problem. Until we swallow the pain of being hurt, our entire body (and the body of Christ) suffers, because the life flow is being blocked.
What a merciful God we serve, that He would offer us so much grace & blessing (brownies of the Kingdom!) so we can live in the freedom of His forgiveness and experience His healing in relationships.
